Frequently Asked Questions

Some river cruise questions answered…

What is a river ship like?

The experience is like staying in a boutique hotel.

You will have a fantastic place to stay in locations that often beat local hotels. Take in a 360-degree view from the open top deck. The beautiful ships often have an outdoor swimming pool, spa facilities and a gym. Some have activities such as putting and giant chess.

On a river cruise, you will settle into a cabin and unpack, knowing that you can now relax, without having to pack, move your luggage, wait to check in and then settle into another room. River cruise is a great option for city and town hopping. You are not just booking a room with a view, but a room with an ever-changing view.

How is a river cruise different from an ocean cruise?

River cruises are generally on smaller ships with fewer passengers, creating a more intimate and personalised experience. They travel through the heart of cities, towns and villages, providing easy access to cultural sites. In contrast, ocean cruises usually have larger ships, more passengers, and can travel along coastlines, between continents, and sometimes spend days at sea.

On a river cruise, you’ll always be in sight of the riverbank.

Which rivers can I travel on?

Popular destinations include many European rivers – the Rhine, Main, Moselle, Douro, Danube, Rhone and Seine and others. Further afield, you could choose the Amazon in Brazil, the Yangtze and Li rivers of China, the Nile through Egypt or Mekong in Vietnam. Steamboats cruise several rivers in the USA, including the Mississippi and Columbia. River cruising is an excellent way to travel and see the world.

Where will the ships dock?

A great advantage of river cruising is that you will dock in or near the centre of the city or town.  River cruise ships are small enough to reach many interesting destinations. When you wake up each morning, you open the curtains and see somewhere completely different. Each day is a new adventure.

How big are the ships?

They’re big enough that you don’t feel the motion and that they can offer you some great facilities like a gym, spa and outdoor pool. They are also small enough that they don’t feel crowded, with most ships carrying only around 100 to 180 passengers.  Also with the ships often having about 50 staff on board, you get fantastic and friendly service as well.

What is included?

Most river cruises are all-inclusive, covering accommodation, meals, excursions, onboard entertainment, and sometimes drinks and gratuities. Some include absolutely everything. I can guide you through the details of what is included with different river cruise companies.

See my blog: How Much Does a River Cruise Cost for more information.

What is the typical duration of a river cruise?

River cruises can vary in length from short 3 or 4 day getaways to journeys as long at forty days or more. The most common durations are 7-14 days.

The longest river cruise itineraries can involve several rivers across multiple countries.

What else is there to do?

As well as the onboard facilities such as the spa and pool, some river cruises have a wellness leader who runs classes including morning yoga. Many ships carry bikes that can be used to explore the local area.

Entertainment in the evenings can range from quiz nights to cocktail making demonstrations to a performance by a skilled local musician. The style is informal and there is always the option of an evening drink from the deck bar too.

What are the dining arrangements?

Dining is always a highlight, and several cruise lines are known for their outstanding cuisine.

River cruise ships usually have one or two restaurants and dining can be flexible or timed. You can choose to sit at a small table with just your party or join other guests. Some ships offer speciality restaurants and themed dining experiences, such as wine pairings or chef’s tables. There is often a focus on regional cuisine.

Do I have to fly to the embarkation point?

It is sometimes possible to travel to the embarkation point via train and avoid the airport stress. No-fly options are becoming increasingly popular.

Which River Cruise line is best?

This is a difficult question to answer as there is a river cruise line that’s best for everyone.

From the five star, luxury experience of Riverside, Tauck, Scenic, Uniworld and Amawaterways to the four-star hotel style of A-Rosa and CroisiEurope, there are a large number of river cruise lines to choose from. There are multiple cabin choices available too, including spacious suites. Many cabins have a Juliette balcony with full height glass doors that flood light into the room.

What is the dress code on a river cruise?

From personal experience on many river cruise lines, the emphasis is on comfort, without a formal dress code, even for gala dinners.

There are some subtle differences, but the general theme is relaxed and smart casual.

Are river cruises suitable for children?

While some river cruise lines offer family-friendly itineraries and amenities, many cater primarily for adults and may have age restrictions. I can advise on the policies regarding children and the options available.

What kind of excursions are offered?

Excursions typically focus on cultural and historical sites, guided city tours, visits to museums, castles, vineyards, and local markets. There are often options for active excursions such as biking, hiking, or even kayaking.

Do I need to be physically fit to enjoy a river cruise?

River cruises can generally accommodate guests of various fitness levels. However, many excursions involve walking on cobblestone streets or uneven terrain. Some lines offer more physically demanding activities, while others provide leisurely options.

Are river cruises wheelchair accessible?

The ships are not usually able to accommodate wheelchairs – they are much smaller than ocean ships and there will be some steps to negotiate. Many ships are equipped with lifts between decks but not up to the sundeck. The accessibility of excursions and ports can also differ. It is also possible that guests will need to pass through another ship, if two ships are docked next to each other.

Please get in touch with me for more details and advice.

Is Wi-Fi available on river cruise ships?

River cruise ships offer Wi-Fi, but the quality and speed can vary. Generally, cruise lines include it in the fare. Be prepared for intermittent connectivity, especially in remote areas.

Can I customise my river cruise holiday?

Many river cruise lines allow you to customise your experience with optional excursions, pre- or post-cruise extensions, and special packages for celebrations or interests (e.g. wine tasting, history and golf).

What is the best time of year to go on a river cruise?

The best time for a river cruise depends on the destination. In Europe, the peak season is from May to September, offering warm weather and long days. Spring and autumn can provide fewer crowds and pleasant weather, while winter cruises, especially Christmas market itineraries, have a festive charm.

Are gratuities included in the river cruise fare?

Gratuity policies vary by cruise line. Most include gratuities in the fare, while others suggest tipping guidelines. It’s best to check with me for the specific policies regarding tips for the crew.

How do I choose the right river cruise for me?

Consider factors such as your preferred destination, budget, cruise duration, the level of luxury you would like, and the type of experiences you want (e.g. cultural, culinary adventure).

With so many options, I can help to simplify the process of choosing.
