Top Things I’ve Learned After Experiencing 40 River Cruise Ships

After stepping aboard 40 river cruise ships and sailing on many, I’ve gained a great understanding of what makes each one unique. Every ship offers its own distinct blend of design, luxury, and innovation. Here are some of the things I’ve discovered:

Ships are similar in size, but interior design sets them apart

River cruise ships are generally the same size, constrained by the need to pass through locks and navigate under low bridges. However, the interior designs vary. Some ships feature large atriums for an airy, grand entrance, while others have open plan lounges perfect for socialising and enjoying panoramic views. Viva’s newer vessels have introduced a stylish mezzanine-level café. Even though ship size is limited, the clever use of space can create a unique onboard experience. The AmaMagna and Riverside Mozart, both twice the width of typical river vessels, offer extra facilities and restaurants while maintaining a cosy, community feel.

Small details make a big difference

Cabin design can make or break the experience. Most river ships offer French balconies so that you can enjoy the passing scenery from the comfort of your own room. One of my favourite pastimes is sitting by an open balcony window and watching the world go by. Avalon Waterways stands out with cabins featuring panoramic windows, while AmaWaterways offer some twin balconies, with both indoor and outdoor views.

Onboard the Uniworld SS Catherine, some of my favourite cabin features included:

  • A mosquito mesh for the balcony window
  • Individual reading lights
  • Plug sockets for various regions, including the UK
  • A great makeup mirror
  • Heated bathroom floor and towel rail
  • A large shower
  • Ample storage and lots of hangers
  • Beautiful, opulent bed linens
  • Chocolates, replenished daily

The crew have a huge impact

A great crew turns a excellent cruise into an extraordinary one. Smaller river ships foster closer bonds between passengers and staff, with personalised service being the norm. On some cruises, butler service adds an extra layer of luxury. Whether it’s remembering your name or bringing your favourite drink without asking, the crew on the best ships makes you feel welcome and at ease.

Cuisine: a culinary journey

Dining on a river cruise is more than just eating – it’s part of the experience. Onboard chefs blend local flavours with gourmet techniques, turning each meal into a reflection of the regions you sail through. Meals can become an extension of your adventure, offering regional delicacies alongside fine dining options.

Sun decks for unbeatable views

The sun deck is the crown jewel of any river cruise ship. Offering 360-degree views of passing landscapes, it’s a perfect spot to relax, socialise, or simply enjoy a morning coffee or evening cocktail. Whether it’s castles, vineyards, or quaint villages along European rivers, the views from the sun deck will always be memorable.

A river cruise is not just about the destination but the journey itself. Thoughtful ship design, a dedicated crew and culinary excellence, all contribute to a memorable experience.
